Variable message publishing system
![]() |
System Introduction |
The variable message service (VMS) unit primarily disseminates traffic control information and provides traffic safety information. Information dissemination and guidance, based on an information integration platform, implements three services on information dissemination terminals: 1) dissemination of road condition information; 2) dissemination of traffic control information; and 3) traffic safety reminders.
Location Selection: Locations should be set up at accident-prone sections, long downhill slopes, bridges, sharp bends, sensitive road sections, before interchange ramps, or before highway exits and toll station entrances.
1) Prioritize disseminating traffic control and road condition information before highway exits, entrances, and interchange ramps;
2) Prioritize disseminating weather-related road condition information at long downhill slopes, bridges, sharp bends, and sensitive road sections;
3) Prioritize disseminating safe driving reminders at accident-prone sections.

Installation Classification:
1) Gantry-type installation
Gantry-type information boards are generally large information boards, which are more difficult to implement, but can publish the most information.

2) Cantilever Installation
Cantilever information boards are simpler than gantry-type boards, generally using character displays and installed on roadside poles.

3) Small Variable Message Board Setup
Small variable message boards display less information and are generally used for safety reminders and variable speed limit signs.

4) Mobile Patrol Vehicle-Mounted Setup
The vehicle-mounted information board is convenient and portable, powered by a vehicle-mounted 12V power supply, controlled by a microcomputer, and partially supports wireless communication settings.

Setting Rules
Except for mobile information boards on patrol vehicles, fixed information boards should follow the following rules:

In other words, when the angle between the highest point of the information display board and the driver's horizontal line of sight is greater than 15°, the driver needs to look up to see the board, which is detrimental to traffic safety.
Taking the highest gantry-type display board as an example (9 meters), with the driver's eyes at a height of 1.5 meters from the ground, the critical point B is 29 meters from the information display board. The resolution of the information display board should meet the visibility requirements at this distance, and individual characters should not be set too small.

System Composition |
The variable message signage (VMS) system primarily delivers detected traffic information, along with control and safety alerts generated by the business platform based on traffic conditions, to display terminals in a timely and accurate manner, providing traffic services to travelers.
Auxiliary cameras can be used for联动 confirmation: after publishing, video feeds are synchronized to confirm whether the published content was successfully published and whether there are any errors.
